{Media Invite} New Menu Items for Shin-Sapporo Ramen

ScreenShot  at
We were invited for a media tasting @ Shin-Sapporo Ramen earlier this week.
As Japanese Food lovers, we were excited when we learn that Shin-Sapporo Ramen is adding 2 new items to their menu – the Kuro Tonkotsu Ramen and Abura Soba 🙂

About Shin-Sapporo Ramen

Shin-Sapporo Ramen was launched in 2010 and strives to bring Japanese tradition and cultural heritage in every bowl of soup.
The restaurant strives to have consistency in the smoothness of broth, texture of Ramen noodles in each bowl of soup served.
This time round, we had the media tasting hosted at the newest branch in Orchard Gateway.

We were told that the chefs behind Shin-Sapporo Ramen are Japanese and they put in a lot of effort in their signature pork bone broth by boiling the bones over high temperature for up to 15 hours.

High-Technology Ordering

Despite maintaining the Japanese traditions and culture, Shin-Sapporo Ramen invests in technology as well.
Their menu and ordering system is digitalised and highly accessible.

We ordered a few side dishes to taste.

Calpis Original and Calpis Soda (SGD4.80++ each)

Shin-Sapporo Ramen, Orchard Gateway
Calpis is a beverage made of water, nonfat dry milk, lactic acid and is produced by lactic acid fermentation. This is the Japanese equivalent of Yakult.
Taste wise is very light with a slight fermented taste. I pretty much liked this as it tasted like a milder version of sake drink.
When mixed with soda water, the beverage will taste very refreshing but I still prefer the original uncarbonated version as the soda content covers the natural taste of calpis 😀

Haru Salad (SGD4.80++)

Refreshing garden salad served with citrusy, homemade Japanese dressing that will leave you asking for more

Indeed, we craved for more after having a spoonful of the greens. The dressing tasted very unique with a tinge of garlicky taste 🙂

Chuka Tofu (SGD4.80++)

Japanese Tofu topped with secret, tangy Chinese-style dressing that will tantalise your taste buds. Perfect as an appetiser.

It was our pleasure to savour these cold and silky tofu under such hot climate!

Butter Hotate (SGD8.80++)

Scallop cooked with butter and served on hot plate.

We could smell the fragrance of butter from afar when this dish was served.
The hot plate was sizzling when served and indeed it tasted really great!
One suggestion for the restaurant though – the slice of lemon could be placed separately (i.e. not in the dish) to reduce the risk of scalding the hands as the food was sizzling hot when served.

Shin-Sapporo Gyoza (SGD6.80++)

(Pork / Shrimp) / 5 pcs

Handmade from the wrapper to the marinated minced pork / shrimp with Japanese spices.

Shin-Sapporo Gyoza
As a Gyoza lover (I’ve always loved the Chinese-style Gyozas), I was surprised that the Gyozas were served with white vinegar as it looked like plain water when the dish was served.
However, do be careful when sinking your teeth into these Gyozas as my mouth was soiled with the oily liquids that burst out from the Gyoza 🙁
The Gyozas were very juicy but I thought the outer skin could be more crispy 😀

[NEW] Kuro Tonkotsu Ramen (SGD14.80++)

Signature tonkotsu ramen comes with the fragrance of black garlic oil. Served with thin, firm and straight Hakata noodles, egg, yakibuta, japanese leek, bamboo shoots and vegetables

Kuro Tonkotsu Ramen
This is one new dish highly recommended by the Chef.
The broth was indeed thick and creamy with a tinge of bitterness from the lightly charred garlic.

[NEW] Aburu Soba (SGD14.80++)

Also known as “oil noodles”, dry curly ramen noodles dressed with flavoured oil and tare topped with poached egg, bamboo shoots, yakibuta and vegetables

Aburu Soba
The ramen was served cold and had a springy texture 🙂
It tastes better if we toss some garlic flakes into the noodles.

Huge Garlic Flakes 😀
The flavoured oil used to dress the noodles tasted rather like the black sauce used to season the Chinese-styled Chicken Rice. It tasted a tad too salty to my liking but I loved how the poached egg added a smooth texture to the noodles 🙂

Wakayama Tonkotsu-Shoyu Ramen (SGD14.80++)

A perfect blend between the intense, creamy topknots broth and the lighter shoe seafood stock, topped with 2 slices of yakibuta and famous egg. A little bit of zen balance in a soup.

Matcha Cream Cake (SGD8.80++)

Matcha Cream Cake
We loved how light this cake tasted!
This cake consisted of 4 layers – top layer made of cream, followed by red beans, matcha green tea and a base made of salty crumbs. The cake was frozen solid when served – resembled ice-cream but the texture wise was a little like gelatine 🙂

The ichigo (strawberry) was not too sour and tasted sweet too!

Chocolate Lava Cake (SGD8.80++)

Chocolate Lava Cake

Based on our understanding, the Chocolate Lava Cake is the most popular dessert in Shin-Sapporo Ramen. Having the chocolate lava ooze out from the cake is sheer delight, not to mention that the vanilla ice-cream complements the lava cake!

Unlike previous lava cakes tasted, we realized that the chocolate lava flowed out slower than the previous ones which provided us with ample time to shoot a decent photo of this dessert 😀

However, we unanimously felt that the chocolate fudge tasted too sweet to our liking and we preferred the lighter tasting Matcha Cream Cake instead as it provides us with more surprises 🙂
