{Media Invite} Spicy Thai – Thai Café: Yummy Thai Fare near my parents’ place

I‘m back to the familiar Geylang East estate where I lived and grew up in. I studied in Geylang Methodist School for nearly a decade during my primary and secondary school days and I even had my swimming courses held at Geylang East Swimming Complex which was an approximate 10 minutes walk from Aljunied MRT Station.

During our food tasting at Sunrise Bistro and Bar earlier, Karl mentioned that the food at Spicy Thai – Thai Café was fantastic and I was unaware that the café was actually located very near the Geylang East Swimming Complex as it was hidden at a secluded corner where the air-conditioned coffeeshop used to be.

My family used to dine a couple of times at that coffeeshop but our mother would prefer home cooked food as she believed it would be healthier for our growth. Hence we seldom dine at coffeeshops unless she decides to take a break from cooking dinner 🙂 We didn’t even know that the coffeeshop has winded their business and was taken over by Spicy Thai – Thai café.

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
We tried 13 dishes in total (excluding desserts and drinks)!

It was our greatest pleasure to have Christina and Spicy Thai – Thai Café to host us on this private media tasting after hearing great testimonies on how authentic and delicious their food tasted.

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
A table full of food just for the NINE of us!

In fact, we were very much overwhelmed by the variety of food their menu offers and we only ordered a few popular dishes there but they were enough to fill our tummies to the brim!

Food Tasted

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied

The dishes served includes:

Appetizer

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Nacho Chips with Mushroom Avocado Truffle Oil Dip (S$15)

Nope, you did not see wrongly! There is truffle oil mixed with the avocado dip which makes this dish so unique although the taste of truffle oil is not very strong.

However for this serving, I personally find it a tad too overpriced. But c’mmon ~ this is AVOCADO!

Soup

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Claypot Coconut Tom Yum Soup Special (SGD18 / SGD28)

How can we miss out the Tom Yum Soup when savouring Thai Cuisine right?

The soup is packed with fresh seafood and was really yummy, not to mention spicy ~ (you can always request for a less spicy version if you can’t take spice)!

Seafood

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Basil Mussels (SGD15)

Mussels stir-fried in homemade creamy Basil gravy.Love the herb taste of Basil in this delectable dish.

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Lala (Clams) Bee Hoon (SGD18)

THIS is the bomb! Yeah ~ we love this as the fried bee hoon has “wok hei” and it tasted great with the clams.

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Chilli Garlic Red Emperor Snapper (Seasonal Price)

I loved the tangy sauce which masked the fishy smell really well!

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Thai Walking Cat Fish with Spicy Lemon Soup (SGD28)

This dish comes with a bowl of Spicy Lemon
Soup for you to top-up in the event that the soup has been dried up
under constant heating from the charcoal flame *LOL*

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Refill – Spicy Lemon Soup

I was very impressed that their fish dishes do not contain any fishy smell which I super loathe at all.

Thai Walking Cat Fish with Spicy Lemon Soup (SGD28)
Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Thai Style Curry Crab (Seasonal Price)

This is a less spicy version of our local Chilli Crab and the gravy was creamy and flavoursome. Would be great if they serve it with fried buns (like the Chinese style) as I would prefer eating buns dipped in curry gravy than spend my time biting on the crab shell 😀

Meats

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
BBQ Pork Neck (SGD10)

The taste of the BBQ Pork Neck is super
similar to Char Siew and it was very appetising especially when consumed
with the special Thai dipping sauce! Indeed, this is one of our
favourites 🙂

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
BBQ Chicken Wings (4pcs SGD6 / 6pcs SGD9)

This is so nom especially when you are sharing with a table full of people!

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Deep Fried Pork Belly with Garlic (SGD12)
Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Hommok / Thai Style Otak (SGD16)

Unique in its presentation unlike the
traditional Otah Otah which was typically wrapped in banana leaves –
this was presented in a coconut husk and you get to savour the Otah
together with bits of coconut flesh for a more tropical feel.

Culinary Vegetables / Eggs

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Deep-fried Kang Kong with Special Thai Sauce (SGD10)

It is good to indulge in some fried food once in a while and this dish tasted just great for a “sinful” treat 🙂

Do blot away the excess oil if you want to dine in a guilt-free manner though 😀

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Stir-Fried Smelly Beans with Prawns (SGD12)

Be warned of the strong flavours from the smelly bean! It will be a love and hate relationship akin to Durain :p

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Dill Pattie (Cha Om) Omlette (SGD8)
Tasted so much like homecooked fare as my mom would prepare this omelette sometimes as well.

Lovely Thai Desserts

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Jocelyn literally snapping and eating away. Do visit her blog @ http://snapandeat.com!

Ending off the meal with desserts. Actually we were already very full so we ordered a few desserts to share among ourselves.

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Sticky Glutinous Rice with Mango (Warm) (SGD6)

The mango tasted really sweet but the coconut milk lacked flavour.

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Thai Red Ruby (Cold) (SGD3.50)

Was initially attracted to this dessert due to its colourful appearance. They could have made the red rubies a little less clumpy so as to be more palatable.

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Tapioca in Coconut Milk (Warm) (SGD3.50)

This hit us by surprise as the overall taste was pretty soothing despite its appearance.

It can be quite filling to have such a starchy dessert after such a heavy meal but it would be great to share it with somebody else 🙂

Again, the coconut milk used could be improved – needed more fragrance and flavour to enhance the tapioca’s taste.

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Lemongrass Jelly with Aloe Vera Cubes and Calamansi (Cold) (SGD2.50)

I personally find this too icy and not so friendly to those with sensitive teeth. However if you insist on having a dessert after a heavy meal, this is the “go-to” dessert for a refreshing aftertaste.

Verdict

IMG

In general, the desserts are lackluster when compared to the main dishes served.

So advice to you is to skip the desserts and go into the main dishes straight.

My Recommendations

Dishes I  would order if I were to visit again would be:

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
BBQ Pork Neck (SGD10)

This is a must-try because it is simply too mouth-watering!

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Chilli Garlic Red Emperor Snapper (Seasonal Price)

I prefer this to the catfish due to the spicy and tangy taste in the sauce. More appetizing for me somehow 🙂

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Lala (Clams) Bee Hoon (SGD18)

Needless to say, this is a must-try. Skip the rice, take this instead!

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied
Deep-fried Kang Kong with Special Thai Sauce (SGD10)

Will order this if I’m craving for some crispy stuff and feel “comforted” at the same time as I’m eating veggies?

Spicy Thai - Thai Café, Aljunied

Oh yes, they serve Mookata (Traditonal Thai BBQ) at the outdoor area as well! Do visit them if you feel like having a sumptuous Thai feast! Not too advisable to dine outdoors at this moment due to the haze though 😀
