(Ad) Revisiting 1942 Alfresco@Changi
The very first time we visited 1942 Alfresco@Changi was for an event hosted by Butterflies and Cakes promoting the 1942 Alfresco@Changi as a venue to host weddings.

As the food we tried during the food-tasting was surprising good, we decided to revisit this place again for a full dining experience and to refresh our historical knowledge of the 1940s wartime.
Arrival
Our dinner reservation was at 6pm but we arrived earlier to visit the much-raved War Museum which we missed during our last visit.

It started to drizzle when we first arrived the place and the staff came out to shelter us with his umbrella which was very much appreciated.

We had great fun watching Sweetie Muffin demonstate the fundamentals in activating a grenade during a war and were amused that the toy grenade was battery-operated and can make some sounds when we press the button – I think it can be very useful for parents to buy for their kids so as to coax them to eat their meals whilst dining here.
Also, we were amused by the extensive collection of remote-controlled tankers in the display cabinet together with the military apparel.

The Old Menu used to look like a table mat indicating all the food names (with no illustration whatsoever) and it is now revamped into a classy hard cover folder with clear pockets to insert the printed pages of the menu.
Also, if you noticed on their Facebook Page, they have uploaded various mouth-watering photos of the popular dishes served which were also featured in the menu too.
Asian Sides are served as well 🙂
As mentioned during my previous review – I suggested that Warm Brownies should be served with ice-cream and the chef heeded our advice and added ice-cream to his brownie 🙂

The House Cocktail has a refreshing and tangy taste to it and we liked it lots.

The chef is not stingy with his ingredients and we felt that the portion is just nice for this dish 🙂

Braised Lamb Shank (SGD28)
Leg of Lamb Braised in Red Wine Stew. Served with Baby Potatoes and Poached Pear.

We were amazed to see such a huge portion served for Lamb Shank. The mutton was simmered to perfection and tasted tender. In order to make this dish to suit our local taste, the Chef made use of 5-spice powder (五香粉) for added flavour.

The overall taste of the burger is good but I would prefer wedges over fries as the fries served here is a little too chunky :3

The kitchen is helmed by Chef Francis Tan, a multi-award winning chef who is certified by SHATec and has over 8 years of experience in Shangri-La Hotel – it is no wonder that the food served was so tasty.
Despite being a veteran chef in Chinese and French Cuisine, Chef Francis is a very endearing and humble man who is willing to listen to his diners’ feedback and improvise on his dishes based on the feedbacks received.
We had a brief chat with Chef Francis to commend him about his culinary skills and he revealed that he joined this new establishment in order to gain a better exposure so as to explore into creating more fusion food to satisfy our gastronomical demands. He also strives to design dishes that are not only delicious but also pocket friendly. Indeed, his passion in cooking is something that is truly admirable.
Overall
Considered as a new establishment, 1942 Alfresco@Changi still has room for improvement and has good potential to attract more visitors due to its educational war-themed décor and great Alfresco setting with the live band. In fact, I have a couple of friends who frequent this place after discovering this hidden gem (we met Gideon and family coincidentally having their dinner at the table opposite whilst we were there).
We will recommend this place for:
- Families with kids
- Gatherings / Chilling out with friends and colleagues
- Dating Couples
- Corporate Events etc
